If you’re continuing a mini pill that works for you, select your current brand from the table below. Your doctor will confirm it’s still suitable during your consultation. Starting the mini pill for the first time, thinking of switching, or can’t find your brand? Book a full GP appointment to talk it through with a doctor instead.

Important: with the traditional mini pill, timing matters. Taken more than 3 hours late, contraceptive cover can be lost.

  • The Progesterone only pill is also known as the “mini pill” or POP.
  • The POP is often recommended when the COCP (combined oral contraceptive pill) is not suitable- e.g in breastfeeding women
  • The POP must be taken every day – unlike the COCP there are no sugar pills or breaks. It must also be taken during the same 3 hour period each day- otherwise pregnancy can occur.
  • There are two brands available, there is little difference between them.

About the mini pill

The traditional mini pills work the same way and most women notice little difference between them; they’re taken every day with no breaks or sugar pills. A newer type of progestogen-only pill with a more forgiving missed-pill window also exists, so if the strict 3-hour timing is difficult for you, it’s worth raising with your doctor.

Choose a paper prescription or medication delivery, answer a few suitability questions, and if a video appointment has been advised, this can be scheduled afterwards.
