Yes. A medical certificate confirms that you were unwell and unable to work or study, while a carer’s certificate confirms that you were required to care for an unwell family member or someone in your household.

Both types of certificates are issued by registered doctors and are generally accepted as valid evidence for leave under Australian workplace requirements, depending on your employer’s policies.

Yes, carer’s certificates issued by registered medical practitioners following a proper telehealth appointment (i.e. phone or video call) are generally accepted as valid evidence for leave under Australian workplace laws, including the Fair Work Act.

We advise patients to avoid services that seem to offer certificates without speaking to a doctor (e.g. you just fill an online form)- these services are not in line with Australian medical standards and the certificate may be rejected by your employer.

Personal leave certification may vary slightly depending on your employer’s policies, so we also advise everyone to check their own workplace situation.

Yes, usually. This situation commonly arises where a person didn’t realise they’d need a certificate at the time, or when there’s a delay getting a doctor’s appointment. Backdated certificates may be issued at the doctor’s discretion, depending on your situation:

  • Often, this can cover a few days into the past.
  • The date of the appointment always appears at the top of the document, but the earlier dates can be certified as the period of absence/ carer’s leave.
  • If your work absence extend more than 4-5 days into the past, it may not be possible to issue a carer cert online, and you may be advised to see your usual GP in person.

You can find more detailed information on backdated certificates HERE

Yes. A carer’s certificate can be issued online following a real-time (phone or video) assessment by an AHPRA-registered doctor via telehealth. If appropriate, your certificate will be provided digitally after approval, with no need to attend a clinic in person.

Online services that claim to offer carer’s certificates without an appointment (e.g. they just ask you just fill out an online form) should be avoided as they may not be accepted by employers..

Qoctor always conducts a real-time video call (or phone call if required), in line with AHPRA Medical Board requirements.
