What is a Mirena Coil?

The Mirena Coil or IUD is a small T-shaped hormone-releasing device that is used to prevent pregnancy. It can also be used to treat heavy periods. It releases a small amount of Levonogestrel (a type of progesterone hormone) into the uterus. It has been shown to be over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It should be inserted by a trained healthcare professional- this is usually done without any need for sedation, and takes just a few minutes. Once inserted, it can stay in place for 5 years before needing removal or replacement.
